Is a Saxophone a Woodwind

Is a Saxophone a Woodwind

What meets the eye is a gorgeous metal pipe that produces the most sensational sounds when you behold any saxophone being played by a skilled individual. Many people are surprised to find that the saxophone is a woodwind instrument. The sax fits the class of instruments as a woodwind due to the fact that saxophones were once made from wood.

Some people believe the wooden reed affixed to the mouthpiece of a sax is the reason for the classification. However other woodwind instruments such as flutes are not played with a reed. Music made on the saxophone sounds magical to some, let’s discuss the science behind this!

How Sound is Produced on Sax

It boils down to the fact that woodwind instruments create sound when the user blows wind through the mouthpiece. The user hold the mouth in a form known as an embouchure.  Brass instruments, for example a tuba, which resemble the outside metal appearance of the typical saxophone, get their sound when lips rapidly flap and buzz a musical flare while pushing air from such vibrational activity!

 Sax is the Man

Time Magazine did an article on Adolphe Sax which explained how his invention of the saxophone was not a viral sensation initially.  Plagued by several harmful mishaps as a lad, the Belgian born, Sax overcame them with this single contribution to the music world today!

The article goes on to elaborate how orchestras, military bands, and most music venues accept the saxophone into the musical myriad of instruments.  However, Sax himself was not alive to relish in this accomplishment of his invention.

Famous Saxophone Players Today

Famous Saxophone Players Today

When asked who his favorite famous saxophone players were, Darryl “Soul Sax” Murrill without hesitation reeled off the following greats of this woodwind phenomenon:

Kirk Whalum, Marcus Anderson, Gerald Albright, Mike Phillips, Walter Beasley, and Everette Harp.

Kirk Whalum

Kirk is the man with the darker and silky vibes from his horn that sets him apart from any other artist, whether on saxophone or not! A famous solo that Whalum is acclaimed for is from Houston’s “I Will Always Love Love You”.  Murrill could be heard listening to repeatedly and playing as a ringtone songs from Kirk Whalum’s “Gospel According to Jazz Chapter I”.  What Darryl “Soul Sax” Murrill appreciates the most about Kirk Whalum is his soulfulness!

Marcus Anderson

Marcus Anderson may be fairly young, but his repertoire speaks volumes for his earned respect as a saxophone extraordinaire.  He is one of the hardest working artists in show business as his brand exceeds music with his entrepreneurial leg of And Coffe. He has his own coffee and brick and mortar shop!  Anderson even had musical projects with the late artist Prince.  His sax ability has opened doors for him to entertain before many well known individuals such as former president Barack Obama.  While many people were scratching their heads during the Covid-19 pandemic, Anderson was still holding concerts for all to enjoy in the comfort of their homes!  Darryl “Soul Sax” Murrill appreciates Anderson’s Gospel influence, soulfulness, and creative out-of-the-box ideas.

 Gerald Albright

Gerald Albright is hailed as a shining sax star among the hundreds of thousands of artists existing today. He is known for touring with Phil Collins, for playing the bass guitar professionally, and for his many Grammy nominated pieces or albums, such as “Pushing the Envelope”. Gerald was also known for working with Anita Baker, Patrice Rushen, Atlantic Starr, Teena Marie, Ray Parker, Jr. and many more.  Darryl loves that Gerald Albright gives him the best of smooth jazz, yet with such a straight-ahead jazzy influence as he plays the saxophone.

Mike Phillips

Mike Phillips broke the misnomer that Hip Hop and Jazz could not gel in this the 21st century.  Murrill states, “Mike Phillips has show stopping skill, over all kinds of music relative to smooth jazz.” Mike Phillips recorded a song influenced by Craig Mack’s Flava In Your Ear. Phillips may not be the youngest saxophonist, but he is one of the hippest whether he is in the vein of Hip Hop or not! He is likely to be seen in Jordan’s and in a baseball cap, but wielding a mighty sound of nice nasty!

Walter Beasley

Darryl “Soul Sax” Murrill gave ear to Walter Beasley’s video recordings especially during the Covid-19 pandemic as Beasley encouraged artists in handling their affairs while the world was at a standstill seemingly in the entertainment world! Such wisdom is no surprise from Beasley who has won various awards and is a known professor at Berklee College of Music. Soul Sax Murrill credited Beasley as having great content with a smooth sound.

Everette Harp

The last famous saxophone player that Murrill absolutely adores is Everette Harp! Darryl indicates that Harp is one who he just loves everything about his sound and playing! Harp, like “Soul Sax”, is the son of a preacher. Both have roots in Gospel. Everette is known for his duo with former president Bill Clinton. He also toured with Anita Baker and was protégé to George Duke.

Saxophone players can be considered a dime a dozen as there are countless around the world. Darryl “Soul Sax” Murrill, as a smooth jazz saxophonist caters towards saxophonist who play along similarly.

Beginner Saxophone For You

Beginner Saxophone For You

It Begins Here

Whenever the word “beginner” is usually attached to something it suggests a need for guidance. Recently Darryl “Soul Sax” Murrill created a YouTube video on his Smooth Jazz Saxophone Lessons channel in which he guides his audience with a review of a beginner saxophone by Glarry. He actually gives the horn a positive review and states that the saxophone is ready to be played out-of-the-box!

Beginner Saxophone Price

Murrill describes the Black & Gold Student E Flat Alto Sax as being a cheap saxophone with, at the time of recording, a price tag of $239.99.  For many that may not denote cheap or a beginner price.  However, when you consider Darryl’s own saxophone, Cannonball Big Bell Series 25th Anniversary Alto Saxophone, you may have a better understanding of his perspective.

 Beginner Saxophone Sound

Soul Sax plays the cheap sax like he usually does from the low tone notes all the way to the high altissimo range notes. He states that this beginner saxophone sounds stuffy to him. He then demonstrates on the same horn by playing with his own personal mouthpiece, the Jody Jazz Super Jet Mouthpiece.  Soul Sax states that the sax projected better with a professional mouthpiece, in his opinion!

Conclusion

Murrill provides a real, in your face, review of this beginner or starter saxophone. He feels its appeal is not just the gold and black outer appearance, but that it presents with a sound that is impressively solid, despite the cheaper feeling pads! He is not a fan of the case, but feels it would protect the saxophone just fine. For his taste, the sound and feel is not suitable at a professional level. At a beginning stage of learning to play a saxophone, Soul Sax feels that this saxophone will be dependable and durable.

Darryl has no endorsement* with this beginner saxophone, but simply offers guidance to many who consult with him on the purchase of their first saxophone.  His reputation is a trusted one, and he desires to provide an objective yet truthful review of this product.

Saxophones

Darryl “Soul Sax” Murrill plays the alto, soprano, and tenor saxophones. His brand of choice for the alto is the Cannonball 25th Anniversary Big Bell Alto Saxophone. He relishes in the fact that he has an engraving of a white tiger on the bell with snakeskin jasper semi-precious note keys! As for the soprano saxophone, Murrill plays a P. Mauriat System 76, second edition. He adores the finish on the horn and the superior sound compared to his previous soprano saxophones whether curved or straight! Lastly, the tenor sax was introduced to Murrill by a saxophone lover and neighbor who found it at a local pawn shop.  Murrill contemplated for about a day or two, then caved in and purchased the Selmer Paris, Super Action 80 Series 2 .

Mouthpieces

Currently Murrill uses the same mouthpiece brand and style for the tenor, alto, and soprano saxophones.  He has narrowed down his preference to the Jody Jazz Super Jet Mouthpiece.  The airflow and ergonomics of the metal mouthpiece is sturdy and adapts to his embouchure and grip.

Reeds

Not all reeds are not created equal

Most saxophone players began with Rico brand reeds that your band teacher sold before class in school.  Murrill played Rico Royal to Fredrick Hemke reeds.  However, he had a revelation and converted to synthetic reeds.  He says that wooden reeds may come in a pack with ⅖ reeds being usable. Though synthetic reeds are more costly, he says they are consistent, unlike the wooden ones.  His go to now are the Legere Reeds (size 2)  American Cut  for the alto and the Signature for his soprano and tenor.

Ligatures

The glue that holds it all together is the ligature.  Murrill calls the ligature, reed, and mouthpiece his setup!  He moved from the traditional ligature to the Jody Jazz Power Ring. He says it is most secure and does not inhibit the sound flow.  Again this item is used on all three saxophones Murrill plays.

Microphones

Murrill travels and plays at gigs, he ministers in churches, and he is so careful to have the proper microphone system to propel his sound to the masses.  This is possible through two microphones. His most loved microphone is the Nux B-6 for its convenience of being compact and light weight.  This was a Father’s Day gift so it has even more value sentimentally.  The con to this favorite mic is that it can intercept interference from other devices or frequencies in operation nearby.  That can disrupt a performance as it can be heard through the microphone. To avoid such Murrill has another microphone in the Shure BLX14/B98 UHF Wireless Microphone System. This system is solid and can withstand picking up other frequencies and radio feedback.

Amplifiers

Microphones are amplified through two sources for Murrill as he is sometimes the artist and then other times both the artist and sound man at certain gigs. Murrill recently acquired the Amp Bose S1 Pro+ All-in-one Portable Bluetooth Speaker Wireless. This is but a fraction of the size of his former sound system, but coupled with the Bose technology is a powerful and far reaching method of amplification.  It is 9.4″ wide and 13.1″ high.  This was such a timely and promising investment that Murrill quickly purchased a speaker case to ensure that it lasts a long time! For larger venues Murrill uses the Samson Resound VX8.1 All-in-One Portable Column Array.  He was so impressed by their performance that he purchased two column arrays.  He enjoys changing the course of sound by adjusting the segments of the array in different directions to cover a greater span of audience or to better balance the sound. True story.  One of his column arrays was caught in a rainstorm in his truck bed and was sadly water damaged.  The water dripped out of the  amp base when turned upside down.  Murrill tested the amp after a few days left to dry and it worked as if it were never rained in.  These amplifiers stood the test of time for sure!

Stands

When not playing his saxophones Murrill puts his trust in the Hercules Saxophone Stand as a resting place.  It is sturdy and has a nook to also hold a soprano saxophone in addition to his alto or tenor. The stand folds for easy portability and storage. Murrill also uses the Hercules Travlite. It stores directly in the bell of the saxophone.  Murrill loves the ease of stowing away this stand, though the Travelite is not as sturdy as the original or regular Hercules stand. Furthermore, the Travlite Stand does not have the ability to simultaneously hold the soprano.

Cases

Darryl “Soul Sax” Murrill protects his prized possessions of the alto and soprano in a joint alto and soprano case when traveling. It obviously cuts down on baggage fees when flying as it houses two saxophones in one compartment.  Murrill has a similar case to the Protec PB304SOPWL Combination PRO PAC Case with Wheels for Alto / Soprano Saxophones, but not this exact one. This case has an overall 4.6 = Five Star Rating on Amazon!

Neck Strap

Murrill uses his neck strap from his P. Mauriat soprano saxophone. It has a protective cushion against his neck and can be used for any saxophone. Murrill suggests this similar saxophone neck strap as it has a metal swivel snap hook for a dependable support.

Cleaning Cloth

Murrill uses a cloth instead of a saxophone pad saver brush.  The cloth has a weight that leads it through the body of his horn to collect moisture.  Murrill suggests this Protec 3-in-1 Body, Neck, and Mouthpiece Microfiber Cleaning Swab for Alto Sax and Soprano SaxophoneThis cloth not only cleans the inside of the horn, but also the neck and mouthpiece.  It is not his exact cleaning cloth, but it is even better!
